FAQs

How do you measure torque?
Torque is a measure of the ‘force’ being used in turning (or attempting to turn) something. Torque is measured by either sensing the actual shaft deflection caused by a twisting force or by detecting the effects of this deflection. The surface of a shaft under torque will experience compression and tension. To measure torque, a strain gauge based torque transducer,  is connected in line with the torque or its components engineered directly to the shaft.

Torque transducers and indicators
Datum Electronics manufacture a number of torque transducers, sensors and instrumentation. Although this will accurately measure on-shaft torque an indicator is required to display torque; or torque, speed and power. There are a number of different types of indicators that are designed for a variety of applications:

Type 300 Digital or Analogue display of Torque only

Type 310 Handheld indicator that displays Torque, Load or Strain

Type 324 Handheld indicator designed for use with load cells, and torque sensors

Type 370 19” Rack Mounted Torque, Speed and Power indicator

TorqueLog PC Software to record torque, speed and power to PC or laptop

Standard delivery terms and timescales
Depending upon the type of product will depend upon the delivery timescales that we can offer. Some products are available off the shelf and will arrive to you within five working days. Our transducers will take a little longer and we can turnaround these items within 4 – 6 weeks from receipt of order. Some applications will be quicker and some maybe a little longer than this period, but we will always strive to improve on this if possible. Contact us and we can estimate our delivery timescales for each individual product.

Why do I need to Calibrate torque equipment?

Transducer and Calibration Services from Datum Electronics

Torque equipment is designed to give accurate measurement on rotating machinery. The accuracy that is required will depend upon your application, but because of the level of strain on the shaft over a period of time this may lead to inaccurate measurement. Therefore regular calibration of the torque sensors and associated instrumentation is recommended on an annual basis for continued and sustained accurate measurement.

All calibrations undertaken by Datum Electronics fully adhere to the British Industry Standard BS7882:1997. This standard specifies the requirements for the calibration and classification of a torque measuring device, allowing for a full and verified service and certification, ensuring a complete calibration service for your torque measuring device and display.

Can you read torque data to a PC?
With our TorqueLog software, it is possible for to read torque data from one of our transducers direct to either a PC or laptop computer via USB connection. TorqueLog can process torque, speed and power and display on the screen. You can also log and record the data and export the data series direct to an excel file for analysis.

What is the minimum and maximum torque level of our transducers?
Our transducers can measure a wide range of torque. We manufacture transducers and sensor for torque ranging from 5Nm upto 500kNm. For larger applications upto 20MNm on large turbine and ship shafts we manufacture systems that can be installed directly onto the shaft.  The only limiting factor to the size of torque that we can measure is the physical size of the shaft - to date we have manufactured transducers for shafts of upto 1500mm in diameter, we have future programs that will require mesaurements on shafts over 3mtrs in diameter.

Can we measure torque for tightening nuts and bolts?
Yes, we can provide specialist solutions for
